The Ringwraiths, also known as the Nazgûl, are terrifying figures from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth legendarium. They first appear, unnamed, in *The Fellowship of the Ring* as Black Riders pursuing Frodo Baggins.
They were once powerful men – kings, sorcerers, and warriors – corrupted by Sauron through the Rings of Power. These rings granted them extended life but ultimately enslaved them to Sauron's will, turning them into spectral servants.
Bound to the One Ring, they are Sauron's most feared servants, clad in black robes and riding black horses. Their primary purpose is to hunt for the One Ring and bring it back to their master.
They are powerful warriors, cloaked in dread. One of the most recognizable Ringwraiths is the Witch-king of Angmar, their leader and second-in-command to Sauron. Though formidable, they are not invincible, being vulnerable to fire, water, and especially the light of a pure heart.
